Orchids of Manipur

Scientific name : Penisia uniflora (Lindley) Lindley (Syn. Coelogyne uniflora Lindl.)

 

Habitat               : Epiphyte

 

Description : It is a small orchid which closely resembles Coelogyne. It has a narrow ovoid to flask-shaped pseudobulb bearing two apical leaves. A short inflorescence arises from the base of the pseudobulb and carries a single flower (ca 2.5 cm across). The flower is pale apricot to yellowish in colour with its lip having 3-7 orange spots on lateral lobes.

Scientific name : Cymbidium aloifolium (Linn.) Swartz

 

Habitat               : Epiphyte

 

Description : It is a warm loving orchid growing in lowland as epiphyte. It has a bilaterally flattened ovoid pseudobulb enclosed in overlapping leafsheaths. Leaves are thick and leathery which may be upto 90 cm long. The drooping inflorescence may be upto 60 cm long bearing approximately 30 - 50 flowers. Flowers are pale yellow to cream-yellow, with a broad, central maroon-brown stripe. Lip cream-coloured with longitudinal maroon stripes on mid-lobe.

Scientific name : Bulbophyllum odoratissimum Lindl.

 

Habitat               : Ephiphyte

Description : This orchid has a small sub-cylindric pseudobulb bearing a single leaf. The inflorescence which arise from base of the pseudobulb has a cluster of yellowish flowers. Flowers are fragrant.

Scientific name : Acanthephippium sylhetense Lindl.

 

Habitat               : Terrestrial

Description : This is a terrestrial orchid growing upto 50 cm tall and it sheds leaves during winter. The pseudobulb is ovoid - cylindric. Inflorescence is 15 - 20 cm long with 3 - 5 flower. Flowers (ca 2c across are white or yellow with purplish brown spots.
