Widespread tree plantation drives in State mark World Environment Day

Imphal, June 05 2020: Every year on June 5, World Environment Day is celebrated to encourage awareness and action to protect the environment.

Here are the highlights of the observance of this particular day in districts of Manipur .

Dr RK Ranjan launches greenhouse rice production unit
Directorate of Environment, Government of Manipur; Kwaklei & Khonggunmelei Orchids Pvt.

Ltd., Imphal; TMH Green Private Limited, Tokyo, Japan and Apunba Imagi Machasing (AIMS), Manipur jointly observed World Environment Day under the theme "Time for Nature" at Kwaklei Khonggunmelei Orchid Farm, Sinam Kom, Senapati.


During the observance, a greenhouse rice production unit was launched by Member of Parliament, Dr RK Ranjan, said a statement issued by the Apunba Imagi Machasing (AIMS).

The unit is planning to crop rice thrice a year, it said and added that apple nursery plants were planted during the Environment Day on the concept that apple can be grown in the soil of Manipur.

Lairenlakpam Indramani from Yumnam Khunou, one who planted apple fruitfully was honoured by the MP.

Indramani also gifted apples to all who took part in the event, it added.

General Dr Konsam Himalay Sigh, former Lieu-tenant-General of the Indian Army; Dr S Manikanta Singh, Additional Director (Retired), Health Services, Government of Manipur; Dr H Birkumar Singh, Senior Principal Scientist, CSIR-NEIST, Branch Laboratory, Lamphelpat, Imphal; Warpu Kom (chief, Sinam Kom); Guru Rewben Mashangva (Tangkhul folk musician and singer), Binay Kumar Sahu (cyclist and project officer, Give Me Trees Trust, Delhi) and Ranbir Singh Garcha (president, Sat Kartar Sewa) Dr RK Kishor, CEO, Kwaklei & Khonggunmelei Orchids Pvt Ltd; Dr Atom Sunil Singh, director, the Apunba Imagi Machasing (AIMS), Manipur also took part in the event.

IMPHAL (Health Minister)
Marking the observance of Worth Environment Day, Health Minister L Jayantakumar planted a sapling of several plants and tree which have high medicinal properties at the office complex of Directorate of Information & Public Relation (DIPR), today.

The saplings include amla, neem, mayokpha (Arjuna myrobalan) and ashoka among others.

At the event, L Jayantakumar lauded DIPR for taking action to help mitigate climate change and reduce global warming.

Speaking about the COVID-19, the Minister said that since Government alone cannot fight the pandemic, public support is highly required.

Saying that the Government understand the plight of the public and that they are open to public suggestion, L Jayantakumar urged all to stay safe and follow COVID-19 related guidelines to contain the novel coronavirus from spreading.

Several officials of DIPR also took part in the event.

IMPHAL (Education Minister)
Education Minister Dr Thokchom Radheshyam has stressed that nurturing the planted saplings to ensure it grow beautifully is important.

The Minister was at the SK Ideal High School, Ngairangbam where last year nearly 400 saplings were planted on the World Environment Day.

He expressed his satisfaction on seeing that nearly 60-70% of the saplings planted survived and appreciated the efforts of the teachers, staff of the school and locality for nurturing the saplings.

He mentioned that last year on the occasion of World Environment Day nearly 50,000 tree saplings were planted in more than 1,000 educational institutions throughout the State.

Dr Th Radheshyam said that the observance of the World Environment Day is important to raise awareness about the environmental issues, especially to the younger generation.

He said World Environment Day, 2020 is a global observation and like the rest of the world, Manipur too is observing the day with plantation of new saplings and nurturing the plants.

He also said that food, air and water are derived from nature and the climate which makes the planet habitable also comes from nature.

It is important that we care for nature, he said and urged all to join hands to build a better future.

The Minister also planted a tree sapling at the school premise.

ZEO, Zone-I Imphal West, Khumukcham Sucheta, Headmaster, teachers and officials concerned were present during the Ministerial visit.

This year the World Environment Day is being observed under the theme 'Biodiversity' .

Bishnupur celebrated World Environment Day 2020 with tree plantation at Mini Secretariat Complex, Bishnupur today.

The event was celebrated under the guidance of District Administration and is jointly organized by Divisional Forest Office and PWD, Bishnupur Division.

Th Biswajit Singh, Minister of Works, L Radhakishore Singh, Chairman, MPCB, Khadi & Village Industries, S Bira Singh, MLA, Kumbi and T Robindro Singh, Chairman, Planning and Development Authority, Bishnupur Zilla Pari shad Adhyaksha, Dr Romabai Lairenjam, DLOs and others attended the celebration and planted tree saplings to mark the occasion.

Bishnupur will plant about 80,000 tree saplings this year.

Assam Rifles
Inspector General Assam Rifles (South) organised a large scale 'afforestation drive' today.

The drive was organised as part of the 'Green India Initiative' on 'World's Environment Day', with an aim to conserve the environment to face the challenges of global warming, said IGAR (S) in a statement.

All the Company Operating Bases of the Battalions situated in the remotest of the area carried out a plantation drive at respective locations and saplings of multiple trees and plant varieties were planted, it added.

Saying that Major General KP Singh, AVSM, YSM, started the plantation drive by planting a tree in Mantripukhri Garrison, early in the morning, which was followed by plantation, by various Assam Rifles troops all across the Manipur, it added that a total of 36,505 saplings of locally available flora which includes teak, pine, mulberry, guava, pine, jackfruit and banana among others were prepared by establishing nursery at all locations of Mantripukhri, Keithelmanbi, Pallel, Kakching, Ukhrul, Churachandpur and other locations.

BJP Thangmeiband Mandal
BJP Thangmeiband Mandal also planted several tree saplings at Langol Tarung Village, today.

Spokesperson of BJP State Manipur, Nimaichand Luwang and vice president Jyotin Waikhom took part in the programme.

Under the theme Biodiversity, the Naga People's Front (NPF) Chandel divisional unit in collaboration with Japhou Village Authority observed World Environment Day in Chandel district on Friday.

The observation held under the aegis of the Forest Environment and Climate Change and Sericulture Minister Awangbow Newmai was participated by NPF Chandel divisional unit president Lh Startson and twin ADC members Sh Manglem and Kt Hari among others.

Village chief and its members, the two ADC members, NPF leaders and workers planted saplings to mark the occasion.

Group Centre, CRPF Langjing Imphal also organised mass plantation programme at its campus on World Environment Day.

All senior officers, SOs and jawans participated in the plantation programme which was attended by Irungbam Lokendra Singh, DIGP, GC, CRPF, Langjing as a chief guest.

Sapling of plants such as lemon, orange, jackfruit, amla was planted today.

Amid COVID-19 lockdown, the Barak Heritage Foundation in collaboration with the Divisional Forest, Senapati observed the World Environment Day at Senapati District HQ, today.

MS Jerome, founding member and managing director, Barak Heritage Foundation, sent a clarion call to the citizens of Senapati to come together under a common platform and conceitedly build a healthy environment by preserving the mountains and river systems and promoting the traditional culture which is eco-friendly.

ALLAFUM (Loktak Lake)
The All Loktak Lake Areas Fishermen's Union, Manipur (ALLAFUM) also observed World Environment Day 2020 today at Langolsabi Community Hall, Champu-Khangpok floating village Loktak, Manipur by following physical distancing norms.

The 47th World Environment Day under the theme "Celebrate Biodiversity" was conducted at Tamenglong district HQ.

Officials and volunteers of Forest Department, Rainforest Club Tamenglong, 44 Assam Rifle, Tamenglong Police and Autonomous District Council participated in tree plantation drive at Gaidai Hills.

As part of the observance, an online painting competition under the theme Celebrate Biodiversity was also held.

The winners of the competition were given prizes and citation following social distancing protocol.

Divisional Forest Officer, Jiribam Forest Division, Uchathol observed "World Environment Day" under the theme "Celebrate Biodiversity".

Several trees were planted during the observance.

Jiribam Municipal Council also observed this particular day by planting trees in different localities of the district under the theme Nagar Van/City Forest. The World Social Forum, Manipur
A month-long World Environment Day observance of The World Social Forum, Manipur began today at Irabot People's Museum, Santipur Sanjenbam, Imphal East.

As part of the observance, a journal entitled "Global Warming gee Cheitheng" was released, said a statement of World Social Forum, Manipur.

It also stated that two booklets that deliberated on issues pertaining to global warming and climate change were distributed to attendees and added that about 200 saplings were planted by the forum at the complex of the museum.

Langmeithet Youth Development Association
The Langmeithet Youth Development Association also observed the World Environment Day by planting tree saplings at both sides of the Khongjao road, which connects Salungpham and Ukhongshang in Thoubal district.

Fences were also erected around the saplings to protect it from cattle.

NERCORMP Chandel has organized "World Environment Day" with the theme "Time for Nature" at Liwa Khullen village, today.

The observance began with the plantation of tree saplings by DC, Chandel, Krishna Kumar and District Project Director, Lily Rose Jajo.

On the occasion of World Environment Day, STC BSF Churachandpur planted 500 tree sapling at its campus.

The event was inaugurated by DK Tripathi, Inspector General of STC BSF Churachandpur.

A pond namely "Vishnu Ganga" which was dug by troops of STC BSF was inaugurated on the occasion.

World Environment Day was observed in other parts of the State too.
