Imphal, July 10 2022: Along with locals, Lions Club of Imphal Paradise and Institute of Driving, Training and Research Centre (IDTRC) jointly organised a tree plantation programme at the IDTRC Complex, located at Top Dusara village in Imphal East district on Sunday.

Speaking on the occasion, Lions Club of Imphal Paradise president Khumanthem Darendra pointed out that the issue of deforestation and climate change was not there till the 18th century.

However, the world began to feel the impact of climate change by the mid-90s with growing human population thereby making climate change and global warming major challenges of the 21st century.

Planting trees to increase or restore forest cover is one of the most effective ways to address climate change and its impact, he said, while appealing to the people of the area to take responsibility in ensuring growth of the tree saplings.

Imphal, East District United Clubs Organisation (IEDUCO) also organised a mass tree plantation programme at Ngariyan Wangkhem Chiru Yumpham and Wangkhem Nongmai Lairembi in Imphal East district on Sunday.

According to IEDUCO president Dwijo, Sunday's programme was part of the ongoing tree plantation programme being taken up by the organisation under the aegis of AMUCO.

Khoupum Battalion of IGAR (S) also organised a tree plantation drive at Up per Ngariyan village in Bishnupur district on Sunday.

In a release, PRO IGAR (S) informed that a total of 30 locals, including the village chairman, participated in the event and planted 50 saplings.

The event was followed by a lecture on preservation of nature.

A two-day mass tree plantation programme organised by teaching, non-teaching staff and students of Standard College Kongba also commenced at Chingkhu Ching in Imphal East district from Sunday.

According to college principal Dr L Bas-anti, they planted around 500 saplings on the first day of the programme.
