Consultation on sustainable development organised

Imphal, November 21 2021: A consultation on Sustainable Development was held at the Gangluan (Nungleiband) part IV village today organized by the Centre for Research and Advocacy (CRA), Manipur.

The consultation has been organized to promote the protection of land, river, forest and natural resources in Manipur, said a press release issued by the president, Centre for Research and Advocacy, Manipur.

Social activist, Gunrei Kamei, secretary, CRA, Jiten Yumnam and faculty member, JNU, Dr G Amarjit spoke as the resource persons during the programme where the resource persons elaborated about the harmful effects of developmental projects and stressed on the need to ensure that all developmental decisions do not pose a threat to survival and human rights for all coming generations.

The participants agreed on the importance of ensuring the free and unhindered flow of the Leimatak River and to call for a review of the proposed 70 MW Nungleiband Dam, the 66 MW Loktak Downstream Hydroelectric Project proposed over Leimatak River.

Further they called for the decommissioning of the Ithai Barrage of the 105 MW Loktak Multipurpose Hydroelectric Project and asserted that the land, forest, river represents life for indigenous people, added the press release.
