Imphal, September 23 2021: Union Minister of State for Trade & Commerce Som Prakash handed over the Geographical Indication (GI) Certificate for Sirarakhong Hathei Chilli and Tamenglong Orange to a team led by P Vaiphei, Additional Chief Secretary, Horticulture & Soil Conservation, at NEC Secretariat, Shillong during the North East Business Roundtable.

The GI for these two crops was applied by Manipur Organic Mission Agency (MOMA).

Altogether five GI tags were handed for NE States namely Mizoram (1), Sikkim (1), Nagaland (1) and Manipur (2) .

The MOMA expressed gratitude to Chief Minister N Biren Singh, in-charge of Horticulture & Soil Conservation Department for the strong commitment and clear vision on tapping the huge potential of the horticulture sector and his tremendous support to the officials of the department.

Sirarakhong Chilli is known for its deep colouration and unique flavor while Tamenglong orange is popular for its sweetness.

It may be mentioned that Tamenglong district is the orange belt of the State producing maximum oranges as compared to other districts.
