Thoubal, August 08 2021: Members of 'Voluntary Network for a Green Earth Manipur' planted five saplings of banyan tree (Khongnang) in the name of Tokyo Olympic-2020 silver medallist Saikhom Mirabai Chanu at five different places in Khangabok area.
Network convener Laishram Devan said that the main idea behind the plantation of Banyan tree in the name of the Olympic medallist is to inspire and motivate young players and other people who want to excel in life by working hard.
Altogether, 20 teak saplings were also planted along the Arong river banks on the day Mirabai bagged the silver medal on July 24, he informed.
On the other-hand, Devan stated that at a time when Manipur too is experiencing the impact of global warming and the government having no specific environment policy for the state, cutting down of 5/6 banyan trees grown along roadside in the name of NH-102 expansion is strongly condemnable.
