Firm launches products made from banana fibres

Imphal, March 09 2025: Under its initiative "Waste to Wealth", Chankorb Private Limited launched its first sustainable and eco-friendly product made from banana fibre during a function held at Hotel Imphal, North AOC, here, on Sunday.

Speaking at the launch event as chief guest, Tourism director Pooja Elangbam stressed the need to focus on developing new products using scientific knowledge.

She highlighted the importance of maintaining quality and standards of products while ensuring they are made available to the public.

Commending Chankorb's achievement in producing items of utility from banana fibres and calling it a significant milestone and a source of pride for the state, she noted that the products launched are not only in demand within the state but also globally.

Pooja Elangbam also expressed hope that the public would extend support and cooperation to the initiatives of Chankorb Pvt Ltd.

Stating that producing products from banana fibres is an innovative idea, she said that since these products are environmentally friendly, there is a need to increase the production.

The initiative taken by the company will not only provide employment opportunities for the unemployed youth of the state but also empower them to become self-sufficient and contribute to the development of society, noted the director.

Pooja also highlighted the importance of patenting the product.

Delivering the keynote address of the function, Chankorb Private Limited founder Dr Atom Annupama Devi shared that the company is focused on producing clothes and handicraft items.

Though banana fibres are often discarded as waste, the company aims to transform such unwanted material into valuable products, affirmed the founder.

She highlighted that since banana fibres are eco-friendly, they can be used to create a variety of sustainable products.

There are plans to replace paper and plastic cups with banana fibre products, as well as to substitute products made by the handloom, handicraft and paper industries with those made from banana fibres, Dr Annupama announced.

Presided over by Directorate of Environment and Climate Change joint director Neeta Arambam, the function was also attended by MU Centre for Entrepreneurship and Skill Development director Prof Ch Ibohal as guest of honour.

On the occasion, a documentary film about Chankorb Pvt Ltd was screened, followed by a fashion parade showcasing the company's products.
