Ginger festival held at Ukhrul

Ukhrul, December 09 2024: The Deputy Commissioner, Ukhrul, Kengoo Zuringla on Monday inaugurated the first Ginger festival organised by the Kaziphung SHG at Kaziphung ground, Hundung village, Ukhrul.

The DC, Ukhrul who attended as the chief guest of the festival cut the ribbon and kicked off the festival.

Speaking at the occasion, Zuringla stated that the collective and collaborative effort of the farmers will usher in flourishing business.

She said, Ukhrul district is bestowed with rich land resources and any crops cultivated here thrive well therefore she urged the farmers to not used chemical fertilizers as it will reduced the value of the crops and lost the fertility of the soil.

Meanwhile DFO, Ukhrul Laishram Gita stressed on the importance of ginger and lauded the effort of Kaziphung SHG for organising such a festival and choosing ginger as their main crop.

She further urged the cultivators to link with Agroforestry, which would be more beneficial for the farmers.

K Chuihaola, president of SHG Federation Kaziphung stated that the SHG Federation has chosen ginger as their main crop as Hundung village soil is very suitable to grow ginger.

The SHG federation with the objective to cultivate ginger for sustainable livelihood by producing substantial amounts and expanding marketing across the state in order to bring a sustainable economy.

Altogether 14 SHG participated in the 1st edition of Ginger festival held at Kaziphung."Ginger was sold at the discount rate of Rs 50 per kg while other organic vegetables such as wild olive, sumac, garden pea, spinach, tapioca and other vegetables were also available at the stall.

According to the organisers, over 2800kg of ginger were put up for sale in the stall.
