Ukhrul, July 14 2023: As a part of the annual "Plant a flower" programme, the villagers of Phungcham organised a mass plantation drive under the banner of "Enhancing Biodiversity Tree Plantation" at Shimreishang Maitonphi Ecological Park in Longkhan Phungcham village, Ukhrul.
The event began with a general meeting on the subject "Environment awareness on community preservation" .
Speaking on the occasion, Zuringla Kengoo, Deputy Commissioner Ukhrul lauded the villagers for their consistent efforts to beautify the park.
During the programme, Dr Artax A Shimray, social activist, stressed on the need of preserving biodiversity for posterity.
Plantation drive held at SM Ecological Park
He stated that beautification of the park requires proper landscaping and planting numerous varieties of flowers that bloom in different seasons.
Meanwhile Rathing Horam, convener of Yangreiram Beautification Society shared that over 600 saplings will be planted in the peripheral areas of Shimreishang Maitonphi Ecological Park.
In order to beautify the park, more than 6 different varieties of flowers such dahlia, rose, cosmos, wild lily, poinsettia, daisy will be transplanted inside the park.
He also stressed on the need for construction of public toilets and electrifying the park for public safety.
Further, he informed that eight village peer groups of Phungcham have constructed a waiting shed for public convenience, further to attract more visitors in the park.
On the occasion, DC Ukhrul planted an avocado plant to kick off the plantation drive in the presence of local leaders and well wishers.
The plantation drive was organised by Yangreiram Beautification Society in partnership with Henry Martyn Institute, Hyderabad.
