Imphal, May 25 2022: South Asia Bamboo Foundation (SABF) Guwahati, Assam and Apunba Imagi Machasing (AIMS), Manipur jointly organised a maps bamboo plantation campaign at Mapao Zingtun, Kangpokpi on Wednesday.
The launch function of the plantation campaign was attended by Union minister of state for external affairs Dr Rk Ranjan as chief guest through online and Manipur University former vice chancellor Prof Amar Yumnam as president while Health Services Manipur retired additional director Dr S Manikanta Singh, SABF founder and executive director Kamesh Salam, Indira Gandhi National Tribal University (IGNTU) director Dr Homen Thangjam, Human Rights Alert director Babloo Loitongbam and Sorshia Christian College chairman Sorei Raman were present as guests of honour.
Speaking at the function, Dr Rk Ranjan pointed out that Manipur's civilisation is based on bamboo and as such stressed on the need to increase the usage of bamboo in traditional forms.
Cautioning the organisers and those who want to preserve bamboo from imported bamboo species, Rk Ranjan instead appealed for promotion and conservation of the 50-plus bamboo species found in Manipur.
While informing that bamboo is one of the plants that helps absorb huge quantity of carbon dioxide, he suggested plantation of bamboo in places where release of carbon dioxide is high.
