Thoubal, February 02 2022: Envis Hub Manipur, All Heirok United Club Association (AHUCA) and Eco Network Heirok jointly observed World Wetlands Day 2022 at Lairam Pat, Heirok Part-III in Thoubal district on Wednesday.
The observance which was held under the theme 'Wetlands Action for People & Nature' was attended by assistant conservator of forests (ACF) N Munal Meitei as chief guest, AHUCO convener Roshan Thounaojam as president and Wildlife and Biodiversity Conservation Committee (WBCC) Manipur president Rabi Takhellambam as guest of honour.
Environmental activist Salam Rajesh and Envis Hub Manipur coordinator Bijen Laishram spoke as resource persons.
In his speech, N Munal Meitei pointed out that though wetlands give immense benefit to humans and helps in controlling climate, wetlands in Manipur are diminishing and some have even vanished.
Deforestation and clearing of hills are directly related to vanishing of wetlands but revival of wetlands is possible if humans make concerted effort, he said and appealed to people to put in efforts and shoulder responsibility for saving wetlands, he said.
Salam Rajesh deliberated on saving wetlands and revival of dying wetlands by narrating factual historical events.
He also stressed the need for saving forest and hills located nearby wetlands with careful study in order to save wetlands or else many negative results might emerge.
