Imphal, December 09 2021: Manipur Pollution Control Board (MPCB) chairman MLA L Radhakishore has informed that the board will install a water monitoring station near Thong Nambonbi (hump bridge) to monitor water quality of the Nambul River.
Radhakishore along with Central Pollution Control Board regional director Dr Z Changsan, MPCB senior environmental engineer Kh rremkanta and officials of the board assessed the condition of Nambul River and Naga Nullah on Thursday morning.
Interacting with the media on the sidelines of the assessment visit, Radhakishore said that Nambul River, which runs through the heart of Imphal city, is polluted by waste materials and effluent dumped by the residents, shops and hotels located along the course of the river mainly in Imphal city area.
As such callousness on the part of the residents and commercial established has made river water non potable, the board will prepare a project and submit the same to the Centre for approval by March next year, he said.
On the other hand, he said, the board will install a water monitoring station near Thong Nambonbi at the confluence of Nambul River and Naga nullah to assess the water quality.
Findings of the station based on different parameters will be updated regularly, the chairman said.
Regarding the project, he explained that it will include construction of retaining wall and setting up recreational park alongside the river in order to discourage dumping of waste materials and effluent.
The board will consult subject experts of the state government in preparing the project.
However, the most important factor to make the river water clean is public's participation.
Without responsible contribution from the public, any initiative of the government will not bear fruits, he said, while urging the public settling along the course of the river to stop dumping waste materials and toilet wastes into the river.
