Ukhrul, December 07 2021: One day workshop cum awareness on Forest wildfire was held at Town Hall Phungreitang, Ukhrul.
Ningchui Graceson Shatsang, Managing Director/CEO, UHDF & MPI in his key note address, said that forest and environmental crises of Ukhrul district is an urgent call and every responsible persons have to partake in the movement to restore our green environment for our posterity.
Much has been initiated by many organisations on this issues however lack of awareness still remains amongst rural masses, he added.
Resource person Joy Kumar, IFS, Conservator, Northern Circle, Department of forest stated forest resource includes wildlife, flora and fauna including all the available natural resources found underneath the earth and is our livelihood.
Wildfire has substantially increase in hill districts and has devastated our rich bio-diversity during this short span.
Meanwhile, Shanngam Shaliwo, IFS, DFO, Ukhrul elucidate on reckless behaviour of local populace.
They burn forest for pleasure or for hunting purpose without considering the important roles of forest that maintain the ecological cycle and without scaling the lost of our economy.
Nobert Khayi, member, JERC, MSPDC, Manipur & Mizoram in his speech mentioned that a huge portion in western region of Ukhrul district is engage in poppy cultivation despite the state's government prohibition on illegal plantation.
The villagers would simply destroyed our local bio-diversity for poppy cultivation for their economic wants while some villages have a tradition of burning forest for the purpose of animal grazing.
Despite insistence effort, unscrupulous individual continuous to exploit forest has to be check and formulate a stricter policies to curb or prevent them from doing anti social activities.
The programme was also attended local environmentalists, youths and well wishers organised Ukhrul Hills Development Foundation & Mikpingla industries sponsored by Department of Forest Govt of Manipur.
