Fingerlings released to celebrate Loktak Day

Imphal, October 20 2021: Fisheries & education minister S Rajen Singh on Wednesday released more than four lakh fish fingerings into the Loktak Lake as a part of celebrating Loktak Day.

A ministerial team led by S Rajen also re-inaugurated the experimental fish farm at Sendra to mark the occasion.

MLAs L Radhakishore of Oinam AC, P Sharatchandra of Moirang AC, T Robindro Singh of Thanga AC, fishery commissioner M Harekrish-na Singh, director Heisnam Balkrishna Singh and other officials and staff of the fishery department were also present during the event.

Speaking to the media, minister Rajen informed out of the 4,10,000 fish fingerings released into the Loktak Lake by Department of Fishery a total of 1,10,000 were contributed by two fish farmers, namely Heisnam Meghachandra Mangangcha from Thanga and Ibosana from Laphupat Tera.

As a result of mass fish catching through different methods in Loktak Lake, the number of aquatic creatures has been decreasing day by day.

Majority of the people residing around the lake are also depending on this lake.

Fishing is the main occupation of the people.

That is why the fishery department is releasing fish fingerings with the objective to multiply varieties of fishes in the lake, he added.

Later, MLA T Robindro along with members of Loktak Festival Organising Committee, Thanga released more than one lakh fish fingerings into Loktak Lake at Thanga area.

President of Loktak Festival Organising Committee, Thanga ex-minister H Sanayaima Singh said that due to Covid-19 pandemic, the festival was not organised on a large scale like before.

But the committee conducted ritual prayer after collecting water of Eshamapal of Loktak Lake at Loktak Lairembi Lampak.
