Kangpokpi, October 02 2021: Kangpokpi observed the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi by conducting a mass cleanliness drive on Saturday morning at Kangpokpi town.
Organised under the joint aegis of Kangpokpi Town Committee, Kangpokpi Women Welfare Organization, Kangpokpi Youth Union and Kangpokpi Police, many residents of the town took part in the cleanliness drive which began at 7 am from IT Road bazar and ended at 10 am.
The participants collected litters and garbage thrown on the roadside from downtown IT Road bazar to uptown Kangpokpi bazar.
Local MLA Nemcha Kipgen, while lauding the initiative of the local bodies, highlighted the importance of cleanliness considering the COVID-19 pandemic, which the world is combating at present.
She said that the importance of cleanliness in "our lives cannot be denied as maintaining a clean environment is for the health of all humans and our health completely depends on it".
Dirt and disease go together and a bad environment is solely responsible for spoiling the health of the people around," the MLA added.
Nemcha exhorted the people of Kangpokpi to make maximum effort in practising hygiene habits and focus on neat and clean surroundings to stay healthy.
Meanwhile, Ngamthang Youth Team (NYT) for Saitu AC in collaboration with Youth Club of Tamuyon Khullen, Ningthoupham, Mayangkhang and Mayangkhang Khunou organised a similar cleanliness drive to mark the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi under the theme Keep Your Village Clean and Green'.
A representative of NYT 4 SAITU AC from Mayangkhang Area, Kanipi Maram said that the cleanliness drive was carried out to spread the hygiene message to the people.
He expressed his sincere appreciation to all the participants and also extended his gratitude to local MLA Ngamthang Haokip for the blessing and support that was rendered for the success of the programme.
