Imphal, September 23 2021: Union minister of state for Trade & Commerce Som Prakash on Thursday handed over the Geographical Indication (GI) certificate for Sirarakhong Hathei chilli and Tamenglong orange to a team led by Horticulture & Soil Conservation additional chief secretary P Vaiphei at NEC Secretariat, Shillong during the Northeast Business Roundtable.
The GI for these two crops was applied by Manipur Organic Mission Agency (MOMA).
In all five GI tags have been handed over for NE states including one each for Mizoram, Sikkim, Nagaland and two for Manipur.
MOMA has expressed gratitude to chief minister N Biren, who is also in-charge of Horticulture & Soil Conservation department, for the strong commitment and clear vision on tapping the huge potentials of horticulture sector and his tremendous support to the officials of the department.
It is said that the chief minister's new initiatives and innovative projects being taken up in the sector has enabled to get the Geographical Indication certificate of the two crops.
Sirarakhong Chilli is known for its deep colouration and unique flavour and Tamenglong orange is popular for its sweetness.
It may be mentioned that Tamenglong district is the orange belt of the state producing maximum oranges compared to other districts.
