Imphal, September 19 2021: Apunba Imagi Machasing (AIMS) observed World Bamboo Day at Sorshia Christian College, Mapao Zingtun, Kangpokpi on Saturday.

A press release issued by AIMS director Dr Atom Sunil Singh informed that Manipur University former vice chancellor Prof Amar Yumnam attended the function as chief guest and IGNTU, Regional Campus Manipur faculty Dr Homen Thangjam and AIMS president Mayanglambam Khelendro Singh as guests of honour.

The programme was presided by Hoping Raman of Mapao Zingtun.

During the programme, the chief guest pointed out that bamboo is a great way to reduce carbon footprint and help fight global warming.

Bamboo is a viable replacement for wood and it plays a very important role in the socio-economic development of the people of Manipur.

Manipur is one of India's largest bamboo producing states.

However, the bamboo population is declining day by day and the observance focuses on the promotion and plantation of bamboo in Manipur, it said.

Dr Homen espoused that bamboo is inextricable to the tradition of Manipur.

Mayanglambam Khelendro also stressed on how AIMS contribute to the development of bamboo in Manipur.

The programme concluded with the plantation of bamboo saplings at the campus of Sorshia Christian College, the release said.
