Maize, lentil seeds sown in barren paddy fields

Thoubal, September 08 2021: Maize and lentil seeds have been sown to the paddy field of Nongdam Khul which have been left barren due to low rainfall.

The intercrop plantation was taken under the joint initiative of Progressive Farmers Club, Nongdam and KVK Imphal East to save the fields from lying barren and to ensure the farmers get double income in this season.

Dr Rajendra Prasad Central Agricultural University, Pusa, Bihar was present on the occasion and practical activity under Rural Agricultural Work Experience (RAWE) was carried out by Himgiri Zee University, Dehradun, Uttaranchal University.

Later the team also checked on the pests and other plant diseases in some fields of Nongdam village.

The dry spell during this monsoon season had made it impossible for the farmers to sow rice in the fields forcing them to leave the fields barren till the Progressive Farmers Club, Nongdam and KVK Imphal East came in to sort the problem with intercrop plantation.

Sowing of Maize and Black Gram seeds were initiated yesterday with seeds and other essential items provided by KVK Imphal East.

Speaking at the event, Annan Takhellambam, advisor, Progressive Farmers Club, Nongdam said the intercrop plantation in barren land was the first initiative taken up by the club and more such beneficials programmes will be taken up.
