KDS decries uprooting of aged Peepal tree

Imphal, August 12 2021: Informing that an aged Peepal tree that grew in Khangabok Part-1 Sanilou area was uprooted on August 6 for expansion of the Indo-Myanmar Road, Khangabok Development Society (KDS) has strongly denounced the axing of the historically revered Peepal tree, in the name of development.

In a release, KDS publicity secretary N Kirankumar said that the aged tree is believed to be more than 200 years old and was planted during the reign of Maharaj Bheigyachandra (1763-1798).It had another historical significance and was believed that Meetei soldiers discussed war strategies under that Peepal tree before going to fight British forces in the Khongjom war of 1891, he informed.

Maintaining that the Peepal tree could have been spared while carrying on with the road expansion project, Kirankumar pointed out that there are spaces on the south of the tree and the road could have been diverted.

However, it was uprooted without any consideration of its historical and environmental relevance.

He recalled the mass plantation drive conducted in connection with the completion of 4 years of the BJP-led government in the state and also the appeal made by CM N Biren to the people for stopping deforestation and cutting down of trees.

All such appeals and efforts have become useless with uprooting of the aged Peepal tree, he added.

Kirankumar further urged the government not to harm the environment while taking up developmental projects.
