Tamenglong, August 09 2021: On "International Day of World's Indigenous People" and as a part of the 'Bharat Ka Amrut Mahotsav', 44 Assam Rifles under the aegis of 22 Sector AR/ IGAR(East) organised 'Jan Bhagidari Abhiyan: Mass Tree Plantation Drive' at various places of Tamenglong and Kangpokpi District today.
Launching the plantation drive at Tamenglong, the Commandant, 44 Assam Rifles remembered the achievements and contributions that indigenous people of Manipur have made to improve world issues such as environmental protection and conservation, said a statement of PIB Defence Wing.
On the occasion, he also remembered Rani Gaidinliu, a great freedom fighter hailing from Nungkao village in Tamenglong.
As an indigenous regional leader, she dedicated her life for upliftment of the people.
Locals along with the school children participated actively in the mass plantation drive carried out by 44 Assam Rifles throughout the district of Tamenglong and Kangpokpi.
The Green Warriors of 44 Assam Rifles along with people from all walks of life planted about 7500 saplings.
Jan Bhagidari Abhiyan was a continuation of the afforestation initiative, where 44 Assam Rifles achieved a landmark by planting one lakh saplings of local varieties last year.
The Unit has continued its efforts to protect and boost the biodiversity of the area by conducting Van Mitra and Van Mahotsav campaigns this year.
