Imphal, July 28 2021: Commemorating World Nature Conservation Day, 44 Assam Rifles of 22 Sector AR/IGAR (East) carried out a massive 'Tree Plantation Drive' in Tamenglong district.
According to PIB Defence, Forest, Environment & Climate Change minister Awangbow Newmai launched the plantation drive which will continue for three days.
The minister along with Tamenglong ADC Chairman and Commandant of the battalion planted a sapling each at Jadonang Park to commemorate the event.
Following them, plantation drives were undertaken by unit troops in other parts of Tamenglong and Kangpokpi districts where mostly local varieties of saplings were planted.
During the plantation, the battalion achieved a rare feat by planting approximately 11,000 saplings in a single day.
The battalion aims to plant 21,000 saplings during this three days plantation drive.
The minister lighted a lamp symbolising the start of renovation and revitalization of Jadonang Park Tamenglong by the unit.
The unit shall revitalize the park and dedicate it to the public as part of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, the release maintained and informed that the minister also released a pamphlet on Van Mahotsav activities to be carried out by the unit this year.
Speaking on the occasion, the Commandant affirmed commitment of Assam Rifles towards improving the eco-system of the region.
He urged the locals to take up green initiatives at whatever level they can saying that these collective baby steps will make a huge leap in improvement of the environment.
The battalion achieved a landmark by planting one lakh saplings of local varieties last year and has been continuing its efforts to protect and boost the biodiversity of the area by conducting Van Mitra and Van Mahotsav campaigns this year.
Celebrating "World Nature Conservation Day" is also a continuation of battalion's green initiatives, which is aimed to raise awareness among local populace regarding eco system conservation and sustainable management of all types of forests for the benefit of current and future generations.
