Imphal, June 05 2021: World Social Forum, Manipur chairman L Sotinkumar has stated that pandemics more dangerous and fatal than the Covid await us if the people do not understand the need to restore the ecosystem so as to save the environment.

He made the statement during the observance of World Environment Day organised by the Forum at Irabot Museum, Lokchao Santipur on Saturday.

Sotinkumar said that mass tree plantation is a necessity in restoring the ecosystem.

The oxygen generated by trees in a day, if calculated in terms of money, is 19 trillion dollar (Rs 10 crore).

As such, it is important to save trees occupying a space as wide as a football ground every 3 seconds, while also maintaining a clean environment, proper usage of water and proper set up of streams and tributaries.

"If people fail to understand the seriousness of this situation, the human civilisation and all other species will cease to exist by 2050 due to global warming or diseases more fatal than Covid-19", he remarked.

The chairmen continued: "Furthermore, the garbage generated by the people emits around 14 per cent of carbon dioxide.

If the global temperature rises by even up to 1.5 degree Celsius, then almost all living beings will have a hard time surviving.

People would be forced to carry oxygen on their person" .

It is time for the people to note the seriousness of this situation, he said.

Later, as part of the observance, Forum leaders Khoirom Brojen and Kanhailal led the other members in planting around 200 saplings.
