Soil testing camp held

Imphal, March 23 2021: A Soil Organic Carbon testing camp cum pre-sowing preparations for organic farming was organised today Pundongbam in Imphal East district.
The camp jointly organised by The Green Foundation, Imphal and Bharatiya Kishan Sangh (BKS) was attended by Irungbam Robindro Meetei, member, Sawombung ZP; Thingbaijam Babudhon, president, BKS Sawombung Block; Dr M Thoithoi, chief consultant, The Green Foundation and Ch Basanta Roy, advisor, The Green Foundation, as presidium members.
Speaking at the programme, U Himmat, CEO, The Green Foundation, said a survey conducted some 20 years ago concluded that the farmers of Manipur were not acquainted with the newer and scientific methods of cultivation and that they also faced the problems of unavailability of manure, pesticides and insecticides and lack of market for their products.
With all these issues in mind, the foundation started conducting various events and took up certain works to solve some of the problems which resulted in the foundation being recognised as a service provider for organic farming by the Ministry of Agriculture in 2006 .
Technique to test the organic carbon content of soil was also demonstrated to the farmers at the camp, which he added was a technique developed by the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre(BARC) .
