Forest Resource

The recorded forest area is 17,418 km2, which is 78.01 % of the geographical area of the State. By legal status, Reserved Forests constitute 8.42 %, Protected Forests, 23.95 % and Unclassed Forest, 67.63 %.

Major forest types occurring in the State are Tropical Semi-Evergreen, Subtropical Pine, and Montane Wet Temperature Forests.

 The forest area of the State is made up of four distinct zones: Burma border forests, Ukhrul pine forests, forests overlooking the valley, and Barak drainage forests.

Manipur has 1 National Park and 1 Wildlife Sanctuary covering an area of 22,440 ha and making up 1.01 % of State’s geographic area. The Manipur Brow-antlered deer is an endemic species for which a conservation project was initiated in 1973. Loktak lake with an area of 26,600 ha is a wetland of international importance, which has been designated as a Ramsar site on 23rd March,1990.
