World Migratory Bird Day observed

Tml/Noney, May 11 2019: The youth club and village authority ofAzuramhas observed World Migratory Bird Day at Azuram Village, Tousem Sub Division, Tamenglong, today.

Several students, youth, Churches leaders and elders of the village took part in the observance.

Volunteers/members of Corbett Foundation, which has been working in the field of conservation at Dailong biodiversity heritage site, also took part in the event and gave awareness about the importance of maintaining plastic-free environment to save the migratory birds from extinction.

Mordecai Panmei, Programme Officer, The Corbett Foundation, member of Rainforest Club Tamenglong and Dilunang Pamei, Community Felicitator, The Corbett Foundation gave awareness and assisted the gathering in observing and identifying migratory birds in the village.

As part of the programme, a bird watching programme was also conducted.

During the observance, Mordecai Panmei gave awareness about the importance of birds in the ecosystem while Lungchung Riamei, Pei Pou (Village Council Head) emphasised the fellow community members to conserve birds in the village.

Adin Riamei, Youth Club president, Azuram Village and Rev Abraham Panmei Pastor Azuram Baptist Church also narrated the importance of conserving biodiversity for the survival of human being.

It may be mentioned that Azuram Village is one of the first villages to come forward for community reserve forest in the region and has been recognised and appreciated by UN Environment and Conservation of Migratory Species (CMS) for their initiative.

On the other hand, a one day awareness programme in connection with World Migratory Bird Day was held today at Longmai Bazar Community Hall, Noney.

Longmai Nature Club president, Ezekial Dangmei, secretary, Jangdai kamei; DFO/Soil and Water Conservation- II, Sheilam Haokip and RFO/Soil Conservation, N Munal Meitei graced the function as presidium members.

Speaking at the event, N Munal Meitei conveyed the environmental problems that the world is facing today due to deforestation, air pollution and water pollution etc.

It is of utmost importance to work collectively to save our environment from further degradation and make it a habitable place for the future generation, he said and appealed all to actively participate in International Biodiversity Day on May 22, Environment Day on June 5 and World Climate Action Day on October 24 in a bid to save the environment.

He also appealed all to plant a trees in their surrounding to make the environment green, clean and beautiful.

Sheilam Haokip also spoke at the event.
