IMPHAL | Dec 8

Increasing the production of eco-friendly paper products will minimize the use of plastics in the state and it is already a high time to increase the use and production of paper products, said director of MAHUD, Th. Harikumar.

He made this statement today while speaking as the chief guest at the valedictory function of 13 days Micro Enterprise development Programme on “eco- friendly making of biodegradable paper bags, cups and plates etc.” for matured SHGs under DAY-NULM and DAY-NRLM of Imphal East at People’s Development Society Raining hall, New Checkon.

He said that if paper products can replace plastic bags and products and further meet the demands of the people, the use of plastic will reduce and it will also help in the solid management.

Appealing the self-help groups to take active role in solid waste management, he also said that reducing solid waste will save expenditures in solid waste management and also save the environment.

The director further stated that many enthusiastic self-help groups often stop functioning as there is less market for their products and they also faced financial problems when they try to compete with bigger companies.

Stating that self-help groups are given a platform in Imphal evening as well as the Sangai festival for their exposure, Harikumar also said that efforts had been made to establish a permanent centre for training and exposure of their products.

Speaking as the guest of honour, DDM, NABARD, Imphal East and Ukhrul district, I. Premjoy Singh stated that the aim of the development program is to guide the trainees in making the products and marketing which will further contribute in saving the environment.

He also said that the government and the department concern will sponsor any self-help group if their products are marketable.
