First Lamka Bamboo Fair inaugurated at YMA Hall

CHURACHANDPUR | Oct 24 : Lamka Bamboo Fair was inaugurated for the first time today at YMA Hall, HmuiVeng, Lamka where varieties of bamboo products like Bamboo pen, baskets, stools, different types of carvings and eatables made from bamboo were displayed. The fair, organised by Ropiang Foundation Trust, will be going on till October 26 at the same hall. The inauguration function and seminar on bamboo was attended by students and teachers where experts from various states spoke in the afternoon’s technical session. The chief guest of the function, MP of Outer Manipur LokSabha Parliament Constituency, ThangsoBaite lighted the inaugural candle in presence of additional PCCF and state mission director, DD. Haokip, while functional president, Churachandpur DC, ShyamLalPoonia and other dignitaries inspected different stalls of the bamboo fair. While congratulating the organisers of the event, Thangso said, “Bamboo was and will always be a part of our tradition tribal people.” He said that bamboo is useful in many ways since the time of forefathers and Churachandpur was an ideal place for bamboo cultivation of various species. However, its potential has been decreased due to various reasons, he added. Stating that there is a need to make bamboo products that can be exported to other countries as well as local markets, Thangso said that bamboo is one of the main sources of food in many states of northeast, which also have medicinal values, and moreover, paper made from bamboo is high on demand.
