THOUBAL | Apr 4 : The trees and other plants which grew at the forest located at the eastern side of Kheba hill under Khongjom police station, Thoubal district were completely burnt to ashes after the forest was torched by unknown miscreants yesterday. The hillock situated in the front of Khongjom Kheba hill was being nurtured by Thoubal district Forest Division with the goal to make it into a forest since last year, where forest minister, Th. Shyamkumar himself took part in planting tree saplings. The staffs of forest department, Thoubal Fire Service and personnel of Thoubal district police tried to save the forest from the fire that occurred yesterday around 6 pm. However, the place being situated at a hilly spot, they faced difficulty while trying to rescue the forest. Divisional forest officer, Thoubal, Rk. Amarjit lamented over the incident and appealed not repeat such acts in the future. While inspecting the incident at Kheba hill today with media persons, DFO stated that the government alone cannot protect the forest. The support of the people is required to protect the forest, he said. Therefore, it is appealed to the villagers who are settling near the forest, clubs and organisations to give their support, he said.
