Rhizome festival to promote endangered indigenous plants

Thoubal, January 08 2018: The first of its kind, Rhizome festival, which aims to protect and promote indigenous and endangered food as well as medicinal plants of the State, will be organised at Ningtam Ingkhol, Tekcham Maning Ching, Thoubal district from January 17 to 19 .

The 1st Rhizome festival will be organised by Rural Auxiliary For People's Action (RAPA) in collaboration with State AYUSH Society, Directorate of AYUSH, Manipur under the sponsorship of MIDS, Horticulture and Soil Conservation.

Speaking at a press meet held at Ningtam Ingkhol, RAPA secretary Laishram Subhachandra stated that all the essential preparation and decoration have been made for the festival to be a grand success.

He said that numerous indigenous and endangered plants in the State namely Kanghu, Yai Amuba, Yai Angouba, Haa, Khutchappi, Tekhao Yaikhu, Uri Moinambi, Pulei Manbi, Yaingang, Shing, Thambou, Mangra, Pan and Koukha etc, which are under the verge of extinction.

Several stalls will be opened during the three days long festival , he said while adding that the festival will promote these plants and explain the medicinal values, during the festival.

He asserted that there would be no entry system for the festival, so as to facilitate easier access for everyone.

Different cultural activities will be showcased as part of the festival, apart from various events and competition including painting, speech, quiz, taken hunt etc, he informed.

Workshops discussing on the indigenous plants will also be held, he added.
