Shyamkumar appeals citizens to be environment conscious

Forests and Environment Horticulture and Soil Conservation MAHUD and Town Planning minister, Th Shyamkumar today appealed to the public to be conscious and responsible about the nature during the observation of International Day for Biological Diversity at MFDS Palace Compound.

“If there is no balance in biodiversity in our state, what is the use for setting up eco-tourism park?” he remarked. He also appealed to inculcate the habit of planting trees and to give up the practice of killing wildfowl.  

 

In his presidential speech, Addl chief secretary, Forests and Environment PHE, AR & DG-SAT, Shambu Singh emphasised on the tapering off natural biodiversity in the state for the last 30 years, terming it as “loot of the century” as the water bodies were encouraged to encroach upon in order to turned them into paddy fields by giving petty patta. 

Further he appealed to the public to be responsible in maintaining the ecology of the places wherein we go as a tourist and not to destroy it by making it filthy.

Speaking on the function, Prof W Vishwanath Singh, department of Life Sciences, Manipur University highlighted about the history and importance of the observance. He said UN General Assembly declared 2011-2020 as the United Nations decade on biodiversity.

This decade serves to support and promote implementation of the objectives of the strategic plan for biodiversity and the aichi biodiversity targets, with the goal of significantly reducing biodiversity loss, he added.

The observation was observed under the theme “Biodiversity and Sustainable Tourism” under the aegis of Directorate of Environment.
