Highest rainfall in state in 63 years

IMPHAL | March 30

The Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR) Lamphelpat today recorded the highest rate of rainfall received in the State within 24 hours after 1954.

With the intermittent rains which began since Wednesday evening relentless till Thursday weather forecasting sites are predicting possibilities of flood if the rainfall continues till Friday evening.

The intermittent rains have flooded almost every low lying streets of Imphal, even within the zero miles of the city. The heavy downpours also caused disturbances in some of the hill districts.

Particularly in Tamenglong district, the heavy downpours have caused landslide along National Highway 37 in between T Laijang and K Sinam disrupting vehicular movements.

In Imphal, the continuous rains have had its adverse impact on daily life especially with all the drainage systems overflowing.

Some government and private institutes in low lying areas have to close down due to the flooding and that even normal business was hit by the relentless rains.

According to the public, the frequent flooding especially in City areas was due to unplanned and sub standard works so called “developmental works” taken up by consecutive governments for decades.

According to weather report provided by ICAR, Manipur recorded 100 mm of rainfall in 1954 which is rare. However, the record has been broken during the last 24 hours with the ICAR recording 101 mm. read more>>
